Because they are so eager, I love the app Place Value Addition MAB. For $1.99, the students get an unlimited amount of problems with 5 levels of difficulty to choose from. Further, the app checks each problems and the students get instant feedback if they are doing the math correctly.

We Love Math
With the read-a-thon and Read Across America, my last several posts have been very reading focused! Let me assure you, we are still doing tons of math! The students are now using their knowledge of place value and applying it to adding and subtraction with in 100. We started our double digit work with the objective of adding and subtracting 10. We began by modeling the concept using place value blocks. Then we moved to more symbolic thinking using just the hundreds chart. The students instantly noticed that on a hundreds chart 10 more and 10 less are in the columns. We have been practicing counting by tens, but starting at different numbers. For instance, count by tens starting at 7...7, 17, 27, 37, 47. We used QR codes to complete a paper that practiced finding ten more and ten less of a mystery number.
We also used QR codes to practice mentally adding and subtracting ten. We went on a QR hunt around the classroom. The QR code would give a clue like "The number is ten less than 57." The students would record the answer, 47, then find the next code by finding the number 47. This activity gave the students a lot of mental math practice. Later, we did another QR hunt to practice double digit addition. The children are doing very well with these concepts. They are hungry for a challenge. I can't seem to give them problems that are hard enough!
