Missing Addend

Missing addend is a concept we have been working very hard on the last couple weeks.  In class, we have discussed using strategies like counting up, knowing fact families, and understanding subtraction to solve for the unknown addend.  In one yummy lesson, Ms. Schultz had us build part part whole addition sentences using M&Ms.

We also played a reindeer game.  It was pretty darn cute to watch and the students were doing A LOT of math.  In the game, two students put on a number nose....without looking at their own number.  Then the third person, we called that person Santa, tells the sum of the two numbers.  By looking at the other player's nose, the student has to figure out what number is on their nose.  You can easily replicate this game with a deck of cards.  If you play with cards, put the number on your forehead instead of your nose.  If you have an older student, this is a great game to do with multiplication as well.

We have a couple ipad apps that work on the missing addend concept.  One is free, it is called Butterfly Math.  Click on the app title to see the app in the app store.  The other app is called Missing Numbers for $1.99.  Any extra practice, with apps or unplugged, would be beneficial.  Thanks for your continued support.
